Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Viewing a veneer from the front, it looks almost like a normal tooth. However, it’s thinner and attaches to the front of a prepared tooth to conceal damages. When your dentist attaches it, the veneer wraps slightly around the sides of the tooth for a better grip.

Before affixing a veneer to a tooth, your dentist at Integrated Aesthetic Dentistry removes a thin layer of enamel to make impressions for a perfectly-fitting veneer.

You have several options for your veneer or veneers:

Porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers are the most durable of the three options and look the most similar to your natural tooth surfaces. They have multiple layers of porcelain, giving them a glassy look similar to your natural teeth.

Composite veneers

Like porcelain, the color of composite veneers is customizable. They don’t last quite as long as porcelain, but they’re more affordable.

Instant veneers

Instant veneers are not customizable. Instead of creating them in the office, the Integrated Aesthetic Dentistry team orders them prefabricated in various shapes and sizes.

Your dentist bonds your veneers to your teeth by hardening the bonding material with a specialized light.

Why should I consider getting veneers?

When you think of the most prominent flaws in your smile, veneers can likely cover most of them. While there’s no health benefit to fixing veneers onto your teeth, they can make it look like your smile is more symmetrical and your teeth are consistent in their size, shape, and color.

A few common cosmetic issues concealable with veneers are:

  • Chips
  • Cracks
  • Heavy stains
  • Deep discoloration
  • Uneven tooth lengths
  • Small teeth
  • Wide gaps between teeth
  • Mildly crooked teeth

During your consultation, you should let your dentist know if you’re interested in getting just one veneer for a particular tooth or several to cover multiple teeth.

How long do porcelain veneers last?

Porcelain veneers last longer than the other types, with about 10-15 years between their application and need for a replacement. Different kinds may need replacements in under a decade.

If you want veneers of any type to last for as long as possible, following these care instructions will help:

  • Don’t chew on solid objects like ice or hard candies
  • Use scissors, not your teeth, for cutting and tearing
  • Chew primarily with your molars, not your front teeth
  • Protect your teeth with a mouthguard while playing sports

If you chip or break a veneer, the Integrated Aesthetic Dentistry team can fit you in for an appointment to replace it.
