Frequently Asked Questions

What is a prosthodontist?

Prosthodontists focus on diagnosing, rehabilitating, and maintaining oral function, health, and appearance. We have advanced training in providing restorations and prosthetics that restore both function and aesthetics.

What kind of doctor do I see for TMJ pain?

Prosthodontists specialize in treating TMJ disorder and other jaw problems. The key to finding relief from TMD is getting a proper diagnosis, as treatment options depend on the underlying condition that is causing the TMJ pain. Prosthodontists receive education in the anatomy and function of the jaw, allowing us to identify the source of the problem.

Are CEREC crowns better?

Our Gramercy Park dental practice is proud to offer CEREC crowns because we believe that they’re superior to traditional crowns in many ways. They’re strong, aesthetic, and by eliminating the wait, same-day crowns reduce the risk of further tooth damage and decay.

How much do dental implants cost?

The cost of dental implants depends on the type of implant and any preliminary procedures needed prior to implant surgery. On average, dental implants in NYC range from $3000 to $4500 per tooth.

Which is better, braces or Invisalign?

Braces and Invisalign both work equally well, so the answer to this question comes down to your personal preferences. If you value a treatment option that is discreet, comfortable, and convenient, Invisalign is a great choice. If the idea of metal braces and the lifestyle limitations that go along with them don’t bother you, then you might be happy with traditional braces.

Are veneers permanent?

Yes and no. Most people can expect that at some point, their veneers will need replacement. In that regard, they are not permanent. That said, once you have veneers, you will always need them. Because enamel must be removed from the surface of the tooth in order to affix them, you’ll need new veneers to replace the old ones; you can’t simply go back to your natural teeth without veneers.

How painful is a crown lengthening procedure?

During a crown lengthening procedure, excess gum tissue is trimmed away. This is done for cosmetic reasons (to correct a “gummy smile”) or to expose more tooth surface prior to crown placement. During crown lengthening, your gums will be numbed, so you will not feel any pain while we work. Afterwards, once the local anesthesia wears off, you are likely to feel some tenderness. This can be managed with prescription or over-the-counter pain medication.

How much do dental implants cost in Gramercy Park?

The cost of dental implants depends on the type of implant and any preliminary procedures needed prior to implant surgery. On average, dental implants in NYC range from $3000 to $4500 per tooth.

Does oral sedation put you to sleep?

Some patients feel like they sleep through their dental procedures with oral sedation, but technically speaking, they’re still conscious, just relaxed. This makes oral sedation a much safer alternative to general anesthesia.

What is an oral sleep appliance?

Oral appliance therapy helps provide relief for patients with obstructive sleep apnea by positioning their lower jaw in a way that keeps the airway open through the night, allowing for better breathing. It is an effective alternative to CPAP machines for the treatment of sleep apnea.

What Our Patients Are Saying

"One of the best dentist experiences I’ve had (and I usually dread going to the dentist). I was greeted by the nicest and most friendly receptionist. I didn’t wait long until they brought me back. They had an air purifier with special lights in every room and made me feel extremely comfortable when taking my mask off. I had x-rays taken and they were extra cautious And extra gentle when doing this. They offered me bottled water while waiting for the dentist to arrive. Dr. Cafarella cleaned my teeth since it was my first visit which is going above and beyond. He was so professional, knowledgeable, super friendly, and wasn’t pushy with options, only suggested what he thought would help my smile. They gave me a goody bag on my way out. I highly recommend IAD! And I am so happy I finally found a dentist I can rely on."

"The dentist, hygienist, and staff have given me the best dental treatment ever. They provide a very welcoming atmosphere and alleviate my anxieties about dental work. I highly recommend this practice, especially if you are an anxious patient."

"DO NOT look any further, Dr. Cafarella and his team are the best! You will look forward to your next visit, which is unheard of these days. Professional, courteous, take time to hear and understand your concerns. Don't wait, book your appointment."

"Dr. Cafarella is professional, personable, knowledgeable, and empathetic. He immediately puts you at ease. And, he’s understanding of your financial situation. He’s got 4 highly technological practices in Manhattan, which makes it easy for anyone to visit. And the locations are lovely. There is absolutely nothing negative to say about this dentist. I happened to “inherit” his services when he took over my previous dentist’s practice, and I’m extremely happy with my “adoption.” I highly recommend!"
