CEREC® stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, or CEramic REConstruction. This advanced system has changed the process of getting dental crowns for the better. Now, instead of waiting one or two weeks for your permanent restoration to be ready, you can have your tooth prepared and your crown placed in as little as a single visit. Depending on the treatment being performed, your dental restoration will be placed the same day or the next day.
While less time waiting is the most attractive benefit for our patients, by eliminating the need for a temporary crown, CEREC same-day crowns are also a better option for your teeth. Temporary crowns can easily become dislodged; the longer they are in place, the more risk of damage to the prepared tooth or even surrounding teeth.
The CEREC same-day crown process begins with digital impressions taken with an intraoral scanner. These impressions are faster, more accurate, and less uncomfortable than the traditional method of using impression material. Then, your tooth is prepared for the crown. We remove areas of damage and decay, leaving the healthy tooth structure intact.
Your restoration is designed using advanced 3D technology that predicts and analyzes the interaction of your new restoration with your other teeth. Our in-office milling machine fabricates your dental restoration from a solid piece of tooth-colored composite material. The result is a crown that is strong, durable, natural-looking, and restores function to your damaged or decayed tooth.
Frequently Asked Questions About CEREC Same-Day Crowns
How long do CEREC crowns last?
With proper care and maintenance, most CEREC crowns will last an average of 10 to 15 years, but it’s common for them to last much longer than this. Brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day, floss at least once a day, and go to the dentist for oral exams and dental cleanings every six months to maximize the lifespan of your crown.
Are CEREC crowns better than traditional crowns?
There are still some circumstances in which a traditional crown is a better option. For patients who grind their teeth, for example, a gold or metal crown is a better choice because they are stronger and more durable. That said, most patients prefer CEREC crowns for their strength, convenience, and aesthetics.
Are CEREC crowns covered by insurance?
Most dental insurance plans cover at least some of the cost of CEREC crowns. Prior to your procedure, we will provide you with an estimate of what your insurance will cover and the out-of-pocket expenses you will be responsible for.
Can a CEREC crown be removed?
A CEREC crown is bonded to your tooth, so it can only be removed by a dentist. If your crown becomes loose, it can be taken off, cleaned, and then bonded to your tooth again.
Can CEREC do bridges?
Yes, we can use CEREC technology to fabricate restorations for dental bridges, as well as the crowns, or abutments, that hold bridges in place.
